Kerber Publishing, 2023

The Presence of Something Past: Ulrich Wüst Photographs by Gary Van Zante'77 This book of more than 200 photographs illustrates the perspective of German photographer Ulrich Wüst. Targeting the social conditions of the German Democratic Republic in the 1970s, Wüst expanded his photography to include both cities and the countryside in his later work.

Van Zante’s second book, originally published in German, features his interviews with the photographer and contextualizes his work.

Van Zante is the curator of photography, design, and architecture and director of the Wolk Gallery at the MIT Museum at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass.
